This is a topic that can fill a website by itself and there is plenty of information available on websites to help choosing between cameras. Some of the important features to consider are: degree of waterproofing, image quality and stabilization, battery life, ease of use, (remote, voice control and how much such features affect battery consumption), GPS and other telemetry (GoPro 11 has GPS, GoPro 12 does not - will this continue going forward?), quality and variety of camera mounts for boats and other planned uses
Video Action Cameras
There are a ton of hands-on reviews and how-to videos on youtube - doing research there is not a bad idea. * **Gauges/Telemetry**
* **GPS**
* If you want GPS speed display you have to see whether the camera in question has built in GPS - usually if so and it is turned on, GPS data will be stored within video files and will be the easiest to implement gauges for. Cameras without GPS will have to have video files sync'ed with the GPS data from another device that records GPS while your video is being recorded. Research how this is done and whether users report any particular difficulties in using the GPS data from a secondary device (phone, GPS watch, GPS remote,…). We don't have experience with using secondary devices for GPS but we will add information here when we find it or get more experience ourselves.

* Telemetry Extractor
* Telemetry Overlay the editors of the wiki have been very happy using this software in conjunction with their GoPro videos. One minor caveat - at least in Windows - Telemetry Overlay creates large video cache files for performance and does not delete them. So you can take up a lot of disk space when you have generated a lot of videos with Overlay. You may want to go into settings and completely delete all of the cache files as you need from time to time.

Mounts
There are a large variety of mounts available both from action camera brands (e.g. GoPro Mount page) and from 3rd party mount manufacturers. We will only try to cover some of the types of mounts that seem more popular or clearly applicable to capturing downwinder action. That of course does not mean that you can't find some ingenious way to use other styles of mounts to capture paddlng action.
* **Head Mounts ** there are various mounts that can be stuck to the tops of helmets or that have straps that go around your head or helmet.
* One issue with head mounts is reliably getting the camera angle you want for recording. This can be the up and down angle and with straps it can also be a question of having the camera flat from side to side and not tilted.
* **GoPro style mounts**

* **High Elevation Mounts**
* High elevation mounts have a significant tendency to sway. When you are filming downwinders/rougher conditions you may want to use such mounts with more recent vintage video cameras which have superior stabilization.
* **Jackson Kayaks** Levator Mount

You may want to put down a couple of layers of wide pipe tape or equivalent if you anticipate wanting to remove a RailBlaza or install it on a different boat. Otherwise removal may remove gel coat or paint also.
* **Kai Wa'a **- We have seen their Arc surfskis with 2 threaded holes (we believe camera mount size) on both their front and back decks. (We are told that these holes are used to hold/position skis during manufacturing so maybe they come on all Vega surfskis?) Conceivably you could bolt down a Railblaza Mount front and/or back with these holes.

Paddle Sensors
sense stroke rate and distance - possibly used in conjunction with a phone app.
* Vaaka Cadence
**Michele Eray** on the **Vaaka**: "I use cadence as the main metric when setting up sessions, as well as any analysis afterward.Leading into the Rio Olympics, it was a game changer as we were based in a windy venue that had a lot of current, rendering speed useless. I really wish we had the Vaaka in the build up to Beijing and London (the Vaaka was developed for the Kiwi's leading into London and was only available to the public once the London Olympics were over). Vaaka has created an app on Garmin that gives distance per stroke in real time, and of course has the analysis software if you want to do a deep dive afterward. The hassle I have found with some of my athletes using other apps built into their devices is that they are inaccurate on double blades or boats that are smoother (kayak vs canoe) and the data is also quite fuzzy and hard to analyse post session. The Vaaka is also simple and robust, and lives on your paddle so you don't have to remember anything!"

Plus it has the benefit of being quite inexpensive. The report is that not all bike sensors will work on a paddle, but that this one does. It either needs to be used with a compatible phone app (reportedly some like Wahoo work and others don't) that will connect to it or a GPS device that supports external sensors.
