==== Race reports (PNWORCA + SF race) ==== **Shane Baker** \\ 02/26/11 #10146 Yes, you can kid Brian B about showing up in Silverdale today for the PNWORCA race minus the iako's for his OC-1. Turned out ok for him as he scored a seat on new Hurricane OC-2. His partner, Boy Chun Fook, left his paddle at home. Go figure, has the cold temperature shrunk everyone's brains? Is that good English? It was swear word cold with a 10 mph southerly wind and waves in our faces for 3.1 miles and too hot on the run home. Considering the cold weather there was a pretty good turn-out. Shane M on his V-12 Elite was all alone out on front followed by 3 OC-2's then the OC-1's. The post race food provided by the Silverdale outrigger canoe club was fantastic. Results will be posted this week on the PNWORCA website. Last weekend Mike G, Mike's son, Matt, and I drove to SF to do two days of racing. Matt was along to check out new student orientation at SFU, Mike and I did the tour with him. Very impressive University. Driving down on Thursday didn't get off well. When we were in Olympia, about 50 miles from my house I realised the ama for my canoe wasn't in the van. We turned around and picked it up. One swear word. When leaving southern Oregon we hit a snow storm and drove 100 miles in the two swear words. I was driving at the time. Saturday's racing in Oakland went well. Mike was 2nd in Golden Masters and me 3rd on our surfskis. It rained swear word hard all day and they had nowhere for us to hide. There was a short course race and everyone had to be off the water before the long course started. Waiting in a torrential downpour for SUP's to finish is no fun. Oh yeah, we had to store our skis on concrete and parking was 400 meters away. The race course was up an estuary and around a pier on the SF-Bay Bridge. Cori Lancaster was there and raced. Good to catch up. Subway sandwiches for post race eats, not a bad idea. On Sunday the weather was great. The race site was Crissy Field in SF. Wind was from the west or southwest and the course took us to the GGB and about 3 miles out to a pair of rocks. I installed a brand new rudder on my OC-1 and went to the pre-race meeting. While I was away someone fell across my boat and bent the rudder shaft so badly the rudder wasn't useable. I removed it, found a joint in some large concrete blocks and attempted to straighten it. It wasn't close to original but I got it working. I'm not sure how Mike finished in class but I managed 2nd in GM in the OC-1's and got recognised for having the least time total for the two days in two different craft. Don K was 3rd in Open surfski's. We left to drive home right after the awards, dropping Matt in Portland. Hope to race Peter's race next Saturday. Shane.
