Fastest 1 km

Self-Reported

Our first reports primarily came from the Paddler's Pod because they started asking the question - Paddler's Pod Website - they ask interviewees what their fastest 1 km has been. It seems like many if not most of the earlier reported times were simply experienced during great downwind runs or surf outings and not when these paddlers were intentionally trying to produce the fastest 1 km they are capable of hitting.

As of 2023 interest has grown (and folks seem to be getting more competitive about this), downwinddragrace on Instagram is now taking entries and reporting fast 1 km downwind times.

  1. We are only including the fastest downwind entry per person, or double - that we have seen reported. Some paddlers may get more entries for a fast 1km on a specialty wave - such as the one done by Jasper in JBay, or for entries where there is more interesting background info, or if they post fast double times with different partners
  2. This list can serve as an index for the Paddler's Podcast interviews because it includes links to every interview (we hope) which has included a fastest 1 km for the interviewee
  3. Check out downwinddragrace for their more complete and recent listings. To keep our record keeping and list size manageable we are going to limit qualifying times (we may lower these cutoffs as more fast times accumulate).
    1. Current cut offs:
      1. male solo surfski entries at 3:10
      2. female solo surfski entries at 3:50
      3. male double surfski entries 3:00

(The Lists below may be only semi-accurate through the end of 2023 - follow downwindgrace from 2024 on for ongoing activity)

Solo (SS1 unless otherwise noted)

Doubles (SS2 unless otherwise noted)
