-About 45 boats lined up for yesterdays super flat 6 mile race in Silverdale WA.  Hard to make a flatwater slog sound exciting, but I'll try..... The usual first 1/4 mile of sorting out and going anaerobic before things started to sort out.  Jumping into a blistering solo lead was Mooney in a surf ski, followed by an unlimited 6-man outrigger followed by Alan and my self in the OC2. Stuck to us like glue was the Chuck Norris X 2 duo of Pete Wells & Biggs in their OC2.  Try as we might, I didn't think we'd ever shake them.+About 45 boats lined up for yesterdays super flat 6 mile race in Silverdale WA. -Somewhere close by was Kevin Olney on his ski.  About 2 miles in, a tiny set of bumps came along, probably from a safety boat, and Alan & I surged to surf the ripple, momentarily shaking free Wells & Biggs.  At this point Olney said "thank you very much" and took their spot on our stern.  After the turn at mile 3, Olney pulled up next to us and drafted our bow or ama wake, not sure which.  Being the nice guy he is, he gave us GPS speed reports.  Said we were going 7.5 on the way south with the tide, now against the tide we were going 7.0. At some point Kevin said he was happy to finish next to us and wouldn't sprint us at the finish.  To which I said, I'd be happy for a gentleman like him to try his best, and we wouldn't mind.  But, true to his word, he cruised in next to us. And thats how it ended, Mooney, 6-man, Alan/Whitehead at 51:08, Olney, then Wells/Biggs a very respectable 60 seconds behind us.  More Pete Wells legends to follow I'm sure...+Somewhere close by was Kevin Olney on his ski. -Just a few minutes back Bellinghamsters Peter M, Mike H, Brian Smart, and others were fighting for the other spots.  Rumor has it someone did a lot of drafting only to sprint someone at the line, but we've had that discussion ad-nauseam We all gotta live with ourselves.+Just a few minutes back Bellinghamsters Peter M, Mike H, Brian Smart, and others were fighting for the other spots. (…..)

-Very moving memorial before hand for paddler Lance Kahn & Auntie Jean Cabunoc, including all the racers circling Lance's 6-man canoe and throwing flowers in the water and raising paddles to the sky.  Lance would be proud of yesterdays turn-out.  Peace-out.+Very moving memorial before hand for paddler Lance Kahn & Auntie Jean Cabunoc, including all the racers circling Lance's 6-man canoe and throwing flowers in the water and raising paddles to the sky.  +It was great to take part in the Memorial for my friend Lance at Silverdale.  Paddle outs are a special way that only paddlers can remember their fellow paddlers, and it meant a lot to me to be there, especially paddling with Geoff Briggs, who raced with Lance more than anybody.  I had some great battles against, and with Lance in OC-2.

+One of the best was at Silverdale a few years ago........Lance paddling with his son Jordan, and I was teamed up with Alan.  A see-saw battle from the start........both boats refusing to ride the other's wash.  I always felt bad about the finish.......that I let Alan down.  After surge and counter surge, Lance and Jordan shot by on their last effort, and I just kind of quit.  And while we clearly were not going to beat them (due to no fault of Alan's) if I would have stayed in it, we would have gone under 51 minutes, like Lance and Jordan did.  There is always the whatifs.........right?  Nonetheless.......Silverdale has great racing memories for me.
