Communication with emergency services (VHF etc.)…

A friendly reminder to all: if 911 is called and/or Coast Guard alerted to someone in distress in the water, and then that person self rescues or is rescued and now doing ok or if that person reaches shore or their destination safely, please call 911 and CG as soon as safely and reasonably possible to update them. Multiple city and federal vessels and crews as well as other boaters in the area will otherwise continue the search until they know the situation is resolved. Thank you!

Agreed, John.
That's part of my argument for having a radio, and having it turned on. It's useful not just to facilitate one's own rescue, but also to help with communication for other's safety and for keeping the CG informed.
Best,

Can folks show how/where they carry their radios and or PLB - feels like there isn't a great fit with my current (Mocke) PFD, and more things in the front pocket only make remounting more difficult.
Thanks!

Hi Leslie,
Not sure about the Mocke pfd. I have a Vaikobi with the front zip and find that my big radio (Standard Horizon HX-870) fits well in the right pocket, where there is also a cord to clip it to. While I've heard others complain about problems with remount with the radio in front, I haven't found that it gets in the way much, maybe because it's off to the side a bit? Maybe others have suggestions for remount strategies or placement with over-the-head pfds with a kangaroo pouch.
Best,
Dave H.

Viperade radio holster from Amazon. Velcro tabs for vertical or horizontal mount. Easy access and secure. Tie a safety line from radio to PDF. Pic below.

Like Dave I generally have not had any problems (in terms of experiencing interference) with my HX890 in my PFD front pocket, but I have the impression that many folks experience more chest contact with there skis than I do during the initial part of remounts.
And there have been days when I did a remount and at the end of my paddle noticed my radio was on some strange channel or screen which made me wonder whether I had bumped some radio button during a remount.
Solutions I have seen have mostly been like the top of shoulder mount that Michael Wood showed.
I am considering trying a shoulder mount because it would be closer to an ear and I possibly could leave it broadcasting there with a higher, dryer signaling position if I do have to invoke DSC…
The photo that Michael showed displays one of the smaller Standard Horizon radios so I will be looking to see if they also have larger pocket mounts - and if not there will probably be other brands that do.

Ahh - the Viperade Holster is adjustable and the size range indicates it will work with my 890

Well my 2 cents, for what it’s worth. I have a Vicobi PFD with large back pocket. Just open half the Velcro top area connect vhf radio to strong cord, place radio in rear pocked.. -after connecting cord to unit I also run it up side of antenna, then secure with short tube. Next run line over shoulder, through shoulder taps for straps and snap on to existing secure toggle with ss fisherman’s snap. It’s not going to break loose- Easily accessible pull cord up over shoulder. Secure does not interfere with any activity… Have call the Coasties a number of times and it works great. Spends most of its time resting in back pocket 🙂 D.
